Chris’s North Kai Tournament Report Part 1

2013 Inaugural North Kai Championship Event

Weekend started off pretty good, Korey HicksJohn SpearsNick Sparkle-Princess GlaserAndrew VanSickleChris Baker and Joel came into town on Friday night. So, we all gathered at Trent Fermanich‘s place to get some last minute testing and trading done. Didn’t get to bed until like 3 or 4am (like a typical DBZ weekend).

Saturday, started off with Korey, John and myself getting to AK Comics around 10:30 and started to get the tables set up and talking to the shop owner about the logistics of everything. Also, we helped him price out a bunch of DBZ singles (that I had no idea he had or I would’ve bought those a while ago lol) and he ended up selling all of them for about $230~. Big time score for him.

Registration started at 11am and went til noon and in typical Score fashion started 15 minutes late so a few stragglers could make it.

I decided a few weeks ago that I would play Red Evil Buu CS over the usual Broly Sayian CS that I always talk about but never play in tourneys. I guess my main concern was like that of Darryl Fisher‘s. Broly has a tough time against a full deck Buu, and I expected that considering I knew that Buu would be the popular choice.

Round 1: Doug Swanson Red Buu CS
This match started out good for me, I entered turn one and attached Thunder Clap to my mastery and hit him a a few life cards. Then a turn or two later, Doug dropped Alt. Namek 7 and turned the tide. I never got my mastery back and even worse I failed to draw a block to save my life. Doug proceeded to beat me down for the win. Sucks to lose the mirror due to not drawing a block or two and that damn ball. 0-1

Round 2: Korey Hicks Red Buu CS
I knew what Korey was playing because we basically playing the same deck minus the three Gohan’s Heroic Uppercuts that he was playing. That actually was the reason he won as well. The beginning of the game was great for me, I took out over half his deck in the first few combats. But good things never last, he caught me with no blocks and proceeded to jump to level 2 and hit me pretty hard. Again, never drawing a block in the last two combats hurt me the most. (And i thought i was playing too many) 0-2

From this point, I figure it would take a miracle for me to make Top cut and i needed to win out and have great tie breakers. At this point the swiss rounds were going to be five, but after the next round, after talking to the shop owner we decided to axe the fifth round so we could have top 8 and 4 done before they closed at 6pm.

Round 3: Shane Schultz Trunks Hi Tec lvl 1 Saiyan CS
I figured with this match up if i could hit him hard enough before he could truce me and gut kick (which i never saw) i could survive long enough for his mastery to hurt him more than help. We actually ended up going back and forth entering and hitting but my level 1 power was too much for him to overcome. I ended up with the beatdown victory. 1-2

Round 4: Bye- Since I was judging the tourney, i decided to take the bye so everyone who came could play one last match.
2-2 (with one bye)

I’m not too down about the record. Don’t get me wrong winning the money would’ve been sweet but I tend to scrub out in tournaments of a good size. I feel like I’m a better organizer and facilitator of the game than player.

On to Top 8 :
1 Trent F Trunks Freesword MBS v 8 Darryl F Black TS Buu: This match was kinda even until i saw Darryl nuke Trent’s whole hand with Black Eradication. That caused the down fall of the Mighty Swordsman

2 Joel G Cell Namekian TS ally v 7 Chris B Krillin freestyle MBS: Joel G won. Not sure how >.<

3 Nick G Goku Freestyle MBS v 6 Ramiro P Red Buu CS : I saw some of this match and you will too once the videos get posted.

4 Korey H Red Buu v 5 Robert T Future Gohan Namekian WG: From what i heard from both players is that it was even until Robert drew no blocks in one combat and was beaten down to the point of no return.

Top 4:

2 Joel G v 8 Darryl : This was a feature match that was recorded, coming soon.

3 Nick G v 4 Korey: Game 1: Nick drew a god hand to start : Flying drill, long journey (i think), and releasing the sword and then South Kai’d for the Chi-Chi to get a sammich made. Korey couldn’t get any traction and Nick EDQ’d a victory. 1-0
Game 2: Korey wins due Nick forgetting to re-sensei cards. 1-1
Game 3 : Korey got in some damage early and was looking like he’d pull the win but the bane of all Buu decks : Goku’s Flight was too much for him. Nick ended up pulling out the win in the end. 2-1

Since the shop was closing at 6pm, we moved locations to Trent’s house for the finals. Which was 3 Nick G v 8 Darryl F. On paper it looked to me like Darryl might have the upper hand but never count out Goku. You will see the matches as soon as our tech guys get them posted.

Again, I want to thank everyone who helped make this a success and I hope everyone had a great time this weekend. Thanks for putting up with my noob judging and running. It will get better, I promise. Hopefully, next year will be bigger! Thanks for reading this and I will have part 2 up tomorrow which is called “Get to meet your Top 8”.
