The Many Faces of Demon King Piccolo

As the discussion around Demon King Piccolo Lv 1 started to gain steam, it dawned on me that at first glance, he is an ally-centric personality.  The game has had many powerful ally decktypes gain prominence recently, from Bojack to Spirit Bomb to Baba and Cell Jr’s.  We definitely don’t need another one.

But what if we made a personality that could be pro-ally and anti-ally … in the same deck?

I’d like to think that is what we accomplished with DKP.  I’m going to share my thoughts on each of his 4 levels and give some insight into the development process behind them.  Let’s dive right in:

King Piccolo Lv1

DKP Level 1

We knew from jump that this had to be about getting off level 1.  What’s been a common theme amongst Retro cards is starting to feel a bit tired – leveling powers.  But why do they keep popping up?  Well one of the biggest flaws with DBZ is that it’s a game primarily played on level 1.  There are countless personalities that never see the light of day because of their difficulty in leveling.  So yeah, we made our bed and now we have to lie in it – be prepared to see lots of leveling powers and concept cards going forward.

I wanted to keep level 1 thematically similar to another Namekian, but tied into Ally.  It’s pretty simple and will help players get off level 1 pretty quickly, especially vs. another Ally deck.

King Piccolo Lv2

DKP Level 2

This level underwent the most change during the development process.  Originally, I made it a direct copy of Goku, Young Again, but for Namekian Heritage cards.  Once the Retro guys pointed out that there are not many great Namekian Heritage cards, and it’s a fairly narrow power, we set out to change it up.  I think the end result is pretty cool – there are lots of neat cards you can fetch and it opens up some development options for later.  If you want to be on the pro-ally side of things, grab tutors like Unexpected Allies or Gathering of Heroes.  If you are hating on your opponent’s allies, get Namekian Shield Destruction or any card that lets you “discard an ally”.
