Even though it is well off into the distance, event submission is rapidly approaching for Gen Con 2013! Last year was AMAZING, and we want to keep the tradition going with some great new events this year.
Because tournaments take a lot out of us and consume the entire day, at this point we will likely just be holding the 2013 RetroDBZccg Championship on the Friday of the con again. We are open to setting up additional events on different days with different formats if there are people willing to run them.
We are also taking suggestions for new panels this year. Our panels last year, It’s Time to Duel! A History of Anime CCGs in the US! and The Rise and Fall of Score Entertainment, were both given to crowded audiences and met with great success. We would like to do some new ones this year, so far our suggestions have been for a panel completely about Dragon Ball like we did in 2010, a panel about how card games can get ruined behind the scenes and even a non-Dragon Ball related panel, like one suggestion about the ultimate game/anime fusion: The Record of Lodoss War. You tell us what you’d like to hear about!
Feel free to put your opinions and feedback below about what you liked and what you would like to see at this year’s Gen Con.
Later, BroZ!
Would love to make it this year.
I wish the championship could be half Tuff Enuff half standard like worlds used to be.
Wish I could go, but I will be deployed overseas.
I completely agree with Shaun. Favorite tournament format for me was always half TE / half standard.
dont agree with the half tuff enough/half reg tournament thing i used to HATE that…BUT…i would like to see the tournament you guys throw along with possibly a tuff only tournament and an expanded tournament…oh and the final version of the crd you will use for your tournament FINALIZED at least 4 weeks before gencon…:)
Need an expanded tourney, I could try to help run it if no one else would. I’ll talk to you about it more Garrett
be nice to see a more game related panel than just the history of the company or game.
Or better yet the rise and fall of OCG by Geoff and Merk, the dos and donts of making an online card game.
Probably not a panel we would do since we weren’t involved in the OCG, but it’s not too difficult to set up your own.
I would like to have more tournaments than just the one with cash prizes. I am willing to run them on saturday and sunday if you guys aren’t. I would also like the crd done as soon as possible so people can playtest. Better prizes so its taken seriously.
Don’t listen to him. lol I think your idea is great. I would like to have a decent prize, seems I’m going a long way just to play in a dbz tournament. Also like the idea of multiple events I will be spending a few days down there most likely and that will be fun.
Sorry, but I’d prefer to play for fun than take things super seriously and power game all day. We’re pretty much all old enough to have real jobs now, so we don’t need to have cash incentives ruining a once a year fun event. I went through years of top tier only metagames, and I much prefer the “anything goes” feeling retro events have.
Also, were you even there? How can you be so sure you want more than one event if not? Pretty sure people like to do other things at GenCon now than just play DBZ, since otherwise… why do you need GenCon?
I get your point Geoff, but I want to play the game the way I did when it was alive. As if something is on the line… Competitive. Sure we all want to have fun but to me people playing their best decks and going all out is fun.
Also why I want half TE. Keeps it interesting and less stale. We don’t need a third year of the exact same environment. Having half the tournament being strait beats would be lots of fun.
You can play fun decks and still be competitive. And I don’t know about you, but when the game was alive, I could playtest for at least a day a week, every week. Now, I know for sure I can’t playtest from January through April, and even if I have time outside of that window, it’d have to be on Skype. Sorry, but the game isn’t alive and it cannot be replicated.
Money is fun. Winning is fun. Competition is fun. Sitting and playing a janky Blue Yamcha Anger deck because it’s soooooo zany isn’t fun to me. I’d rather have intense play.
Money is fun, but we’re adults. We’d get better money from our jobs, considering it’s not like Joshman and Garrett would front the prize money out of pocket. That would mean prizes would be based on attendance, and the cost of tournament entrance would increase. And as the cost to enter increases, so too does the likelihood of people entering diminish to some degree.
Competition is fun, yes. But playing against the same power gaming decks that people played 10 years ago is not fun. We did that already. 10 years ago. And why does a “fun deck” automatically have to be some horrid jank combination? Why can’t it be a similar build to a “top” deck, just with a personality you actually like? For example, Future Gohan Saiyan instead of Broly Saiyan, or someone like Bojack instead of Majin Buu? Or, one of my favorite fun decks that I saw last year, Dr Wheelo instead of Master Roshi?
Prize money is easy to come by. Small amount to enter, top four split the money. Money talks, bull crap walks. If someone is going to travel hours and hours and spend money on hotels, food, gas, entering the convention and so on, the reward for it should be something worth the effort. You can sit at home or your local shop with friends and play “fun” decks for free without having to spend a ton of money to get there. Money is the reward for going out of your way to go and compete.
And the environment isn’t the same as ten years ago. Play style, ways of thinking and playing has evolved since then. My playtest group was reflecting on this in our recent games. If we had thought/played/built the way we are now how different would things have been previously. If I play, I and many others want to play the very best decks possible. There’s no joy in beating something if it’s not the best. Taking your example, if I enter an event and beat a deck using Raditz lv 1 HT from Saiyan Saga instead of Broly, and then beat a deck using Dodoria from Frieza Saga instead of Evil Buu, I would feel like I proved and accomplished nothing because those weren’t the best they could be.
If there is a cash tournament, alcohol must be involved. We are all old enough to have “real jobs”, so we are all old enough to be drunken masters. We could even give out a bottle of Patron for first place.
You might be a good fighter. But are you still a good fighter in the Gravity Chamber?
Chippy
I do martial arts but I’ve never trained drunk. Guess I have to now to prepare for Gencon.
First, hoping this properly builds a tree and doesn’t put it as a new “thread” under Chippy’s post, but just in case it screws up, this is in response to Edison Carasio.
In what world is this game alive enough to still have local scenes? And using last year’s price point as a comparison, if everyone paid double (which I believe would be an extra $6), that’d be a $300 prize purse. I’m not even sure if it’d be possible to get GenCon to essentially “pay” for the tickets, but it’s not like you can charge people outside of the tickets. So how do you propose to do it?
And yes, if everyone started power gaming and net decking the best decks, the environment would be the same. Guess what? There haven’t been any new decks that are top tier, because the only cards that are new are Retro cards that are meant for fun, not breaking the game.
Also, jesus christ stop talking about random jank as if it were “my example”. My example was using tier 2 and 3 characters, not unusables. If you wanted to use Raditz, you’d obviously use the Retro level. And guess what? He’s actually not bad.
And I have to ask, again, were you there last year? Do you even intend to go this year? If not, why are you giving your two cents?
I’ll address your points in the order you made them:
If you don’t have a local scene, maybe you can help build one. Here in the Midwest, various groups do host events and tournaments. In fact, I’ve attended two in the past several months, and another is approaching March. If you want to play for fun, why not make demo decks with proxies, go to your local shop and drum up interest, rather than trying to hijack the biggest event for the sake of “fun decks”?
A $300 purse is very big for a “dead game”, not much less than the purse from a regional during the games hey day. Maybe if more money was available, more players would come. I’m not sure what you mean by “I’m not even sure if it’d be possible to get GenCon to essentially “pay” for the tickets, but it’s not like you can charge people outside of the tickets.”
Several Retro cards ARE broken and we have been in discussion with them on this and presenting the results of weeks of playtesting.
If I (key word being I here) was playing Raditz, I wouldn’t be using him in Saiyan and I WOULD be using the SS HT Lv. 1.
And to answer your question about “where was I last year”, I truly wish I could have gone. I didn’t find out about Retro until a couple weeks before their event, which was not enough time to take money out of my bank account, build decks, play test, purchase tickets, find a hotel room etc.
If you want to come and play a “fun” Tier 2 or 3 or whatever deck, do it. Go ahead, go nuts. Whatever you want. But don’t get offended and try to hijack things by discouraging people from playing at the highest level at the biggest event, something this website lists along with the previous world championships, because all that does is simply cheapen the title and event in the long run. If people choose to play decks they think are fun and they win, great. But when they lose, don’t get mad at the people playing tier one builds because ultimately it was your decision to reach for something less than being the best at something called a championship.
Sad to think that in those 4 years of Score run dbzccg with competitive tournaments and decks, there was so many people competing for prizes without having any fun. I personally found the competitive decks and games much more fun than casual games. The skill and strategy involved in a competitive environment is what made me keep playing this game for so long, and why I don’t try very hard to make time for casual games on octgn now. Casual games can still be fun, but when you only have 1 opportunity each year to relive that experience of a large tournament I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to make the most of it and play at your best.
I’ll also respond in order (though I doubt it’ll continue the tree, not sure why it doesn’t want to work properly):
1) Because I have a real job, where I’m working 60+ hours a week. And even during the game’s prime, there were only like 3 other players in the area. I had to travel about an hour away and go to Joshman’s local scene to get any level of real gameplay.
2) I’m not hijacking it. This is how it already is. You’re the only trying to hijack it to attempt to make money.
3) $300 is barely more than first place from old regionals, let alone the entire purse. And again, the money has to be based purely on attendance. Joshman and Garrett are not going to front the money out of pocket. They aren’t making money on this, which is something you seem to not understand. Yet you want them to LOSE money now?
4) What I mean is GenCon will not allow you to charge money at the event to play in the event. They only go by tickets. You cannot do both tickets and cash, since you’d have no way to advertise it as such, and once someone buys the ticket, you cannot then say “Oh hey, you gotta pay us too for the prizes.” And as for GenCon “paying”, I mean if you doubled the price, they wouldn’t likely reimburse you the extra to use as prize money.
5) As for Raditz, you’re changing your argument. First you said you’d use him in Saiyan with the HT, as an example of him being bad. I said no, you’d use the Retro level 1 in Saiyan, as that’s actually not bad. Now you’re saying you wouldn’t use him in Saiyan, but something else. Make up your mind on what you’re arguing.
6) Again, you’re the one trying to hijack the event, not me. This makes it evident that you did not come to the event last year. And sorry, but I only laugh at people who take the tournament that seriously. The game is dead. If you can only get your self-worth by winning at a game that’s been dead for 10 years, then I only feel sorry for you. Maybe there’s a reason you don’t attend the events, yet nearly everyone who has enjoyed it. Joshman and Garrett aren’t asking for what people want “instead”, but what they “also want”.
Kami, don’t misconstrue what people say. Having fun then and having fun now are different. Unless, perhaps, you’re the same person in the same situation now that you were 10 years ago…
I’d still prefer to have that same competitive tournament again that existed years ago while the game was still running. Regardless of how I’ve changed, playing in those tournaments were my favorite moments of the game and I’d love to have that opportunity to do it again.
I understand a lot of people will be going to meet up with old friends and enjoy the experience of GenCon together (which is why many people only want a tournament on 1 day). NZ is a lot smaller, and all the old friends I have made through the game live in the same city as me. So that is very different for me as I can just meet up with them whenever we choose to catch up and have some casual games for fun.
The game however, I imagine would have been the same for all of us. It was fun to play competitively and to try my best, especially when others were doing the same. Casual games with friends can be fun too but big tournaments don’t happen often enough to treat them as the same thing. The Tier 1 decks have always been fun for me to play with or play against, even in casual games, as long as we both have something that can put up a fight against each other and give us a fun game.
No one can hi-jack the tournament and force it to be competitive, or casual. Some people will bring a competitive deck, and some will bring a casual deck. The entry fee or prizes cannot be high enough to affect this. Posting your opinion here doesn’t mean you’ve ruined the tournament for everyone else.
kami? whats a kami? is that one of those viral infections that latch onto websites and destroys them? Oh snap, cant delete my comments here dickhead, best go back there so you can dictate the discussions how you want.
The casual nature of our events will continue and is non-negotiable.
+1
I’m all for a serious competition, and agree that competition + money = fun, however there are plenty of other things that can fill that role for us (if you so choose) that haven’t died in 2006.
This is 100% about nostalgia, community, and close friends for me. The competitive scene in DBZ will always hold a special place. But that’s kinda where I want it to stay.
As far as suggestions:
I think a drunken tournament is an excellent idea. Do want:
6 rounds of single elimination (Those loooong ass rounds. Spinning cards?)
Pregame round
Winner takes a shot, Loser takes two.
Fun would be had.
Also, Tuff Enuff should 100% be included. Maybe do two separate tournaments and declare an overall ‘Tournament Champion’ that performs the best in both?
+1 for the drunken master tourney. I think Didier has it right. 1 shot for win 2 for loss, and 4 if overkilled (for TE). Would be a very very fun time.
The more I sit here at my day job staring into the void and thinking about a real drunken tournament, the more I want to see it happen.
I assume retro has enough on their plate already, so if I organized it, made it super fun (http://www.cafepress.com/+dragon-ball-z+shot-glasses), would anyone be interested in participating?
Are You Drunk Enuff???
Format: Tuff Enuff (Only survival victory, can overkill)
Rounds: 6
Special rules:
Each round’s winner takes 1 shot
Each round’s loser takes 2 shots
Any overkilled player must shotgun a beer and then immediately enact a solo Fusion Dance to be recorded at the end of the round.
With 50m rounds that would be 1-2 drinks per hour. Reasonable.
Can we even bring alcohol into GenCon? The site FAQ and event planning manual says nothing about including controlled substances so…
I don’t know if the rules say you can or not, but it certainly didn’t stop anyone last year. We were discreet about it, though, so maybe it’s not something you want seen.
I’m in. Totally playing for the Capsule Corp shot glass. FFFFFUUUUUSSSIONN HA!
You sir, are a genius. Would totally play for that CC shot glass. A question thou, could we make this a TE tournament? If you get overkilled more shots!!
I think everyone knows our stance on alcohol at the tournament, so let me just clarify that due to liability issues Gen Con will not allow a game that promotes irresponsible drinking and the convention center itself will not allow us to provide alcohol (as well as a few other legal reasons I’m sure).
no, but they do let you have open containers and walk around with someone dress up as an Xmen during the AMs
I figured this would be how it was. In light of this, we’d need to make some slight adjustments. Probably shouldn’t say ‘Drunk’ in the title. Shotgunning a beer MAY call a wee bit too much attention.
But I still don’t think it’s a bad idea. Rules are meant to be broken anyway. Especially dumb ones.
As long as people here show interest, I’d still run it. Figure we could just play it off as water/be discrete. No one would be any the wiser with someone walking around with a big Acadia/Deer Park bottle filling cups at tables. It’s not a crime to do The Fusion Dance in a convention hall.
Once the message board is up on here I’ll make a formal post about this where we can discuss it at length as far as logistics go and have sign ups etc.
Any of you retro guys worried about backlash? If so, I’ll make sure it’s segregated.
I’m 100% go for my first Gen Con since 2002. I probably won’t be playing in the event (although I’ll probably have to play some games on the side.) What I will be doing though is photographing the event and hopefully getting the OK from Josh and Garrett to set up a feature match table where I’ll be able to take shots in a more controlled setting.
+1 for the drunken tournament idea…still dont like tuff enough but maybe 3 rounds of each? i dunno…1 things for sure…organizer of the tourny takes 3 shots of grain to start it off…and must wear and absurd amount of glow sticks during the tourny…even if its during the daytime…
“Let’s do more shots!”
“Ok, but I’m not doing any more grain. Vodka only.”
“Right…here’s your shot of ‘Vodka’ buddy”
Why am I still friends with you again?
because people like us who play dbz are socially awqward(?) and have trouble making new/other friends…that and you love me…eat it sukka
I wish I could have been old enough to have done tourney’s and find people who played the game back when it was played. I’m still in high school and I got into the game in like 02 cause of a friend. Never knew anyone who had the cards and played except him.
My wish for Gen Con? Ban Baba, its too good.
Disagree. There’s so much that beats her.
ya, I think the retro guys got it right on this one. She has some really easy ways to beat her. Just gotta think out of the box.
.
yeah like running tier 1 deck
Future Gohan > Baba amirite?
Have to say, I find all this passive aggressive ass kissing to be hilarious. First, she’s supposedly so broken beyond belief that she’s being called “worse than SWK”, and being banned from Darryl’s Midwest tournament. A week later, she supposedly “has very easy ways to beat her”, was “done right”, and “so much beats her”. Yet… it appears the Darryl Midwest event, the ones who made both of the above claims, still has her banned. You all aren’t as smart as you think you are.
FYI Darryl Fisher isn’t running the event Baba is banned from. And the folks who created and playtested Baba said she’s not broken, so who is anyone to argue?
And Future Gohan Saiyan is better. Level gaining, huge card advantage. What’s not to like?
Just saying, your little passive aggressive attitude doesn’t do you any favors in getting anyone to take you even close to seriously. Others don’t agree with you that something’s broke, so you start being snide asses? Yeah, real mature. Keep it classy.
If you think we’re being snide or whatever, that’s your problem. You’ve made up your opinion on lots of things so not gonna waste any time trying to get you to think differently. You are free to assume what you are going to assume.
You seem to be under the impression that I’m Josh or Garrett. I’m not. I don’t make the decisions as to whether a card is changed or not. In fact, your initial claims made me want to look into her further, just to be sure. However, it’s busy season, and I’m working 60+ hour weeks, plus 1-2 hours of transit time per day (6 days a week). That doesn’t leave much time for me to test until April.
However, your current passive aggressiveness and childish behavior has me less worried, as I now find you rather petty. As for you being snide, that’s YOUR problem. Not mine. You’re the ones who want things done, so… you act like asses? That’s pro, right there.
Everyone is free to run their events in any way they choose.
Boy, I can’t wait for those forums to get here 😀
I would just like to state that I do not think she is broke. I think josh/garrett made the right call and I was not being snide to anyone. I do not appreciate being insulted for no reason what so ever.
You said she’s better than SWK. SWK is generally seen as broken. Logic therefore dictates…
Why do you want to argue so much Sayjin? Why are you so mad? I see multiple posts agreeing with you but you still want to fight and name call. I’m not even sure what point you are trying to argue.
Agreeing with what? I haven’t stated an opinion on Baba, if you haven’t noticed, other than I want to test her myself, but don’t have time. You’re just so quick to assume things, yet denounce others for deciding things prematurely.
I totally agree with Sayjin. I live about 20 hours from where Gencon would be held and the cash prize is far from a good incentive. Sure it would be nice to win some money but I could care less to be honest. I am in this for fun, I just want to play some good old dbz ccg with skilled players. Plus there are tons of things to see at Gencon and i’m sure I won’t be gaming all day. The only things that would make me stay and game all day would be if other formats would be considered, such as old z, tuff enuff and expanded.
I think the most important thing is communication and ensuring the latest CRD is ready, maybe at least a month before the games begin. It is tiring to work on decks and get amped to play them only to find out your opponent is using a different CRD. It is frustrating when both players don’t agree on which CRD should be used. As long as that is transparent then I think we should be in the clear. I would like to see OCG/Top Tier’s CRD version used (i.e; black weakness drill banned, kcon and pahg restricted). The retro one is poop. It’s almost like all the hard work put into those changes were reversed.
I may honestly sign up for Gencon and end up leaving with a couple new players I met to play some games in private, for reasons Saiyin mentioned. Reading these posts, Saiyjin isn’t arguing. He is making some excellent points that people aren’t directly answering and to some extent acknowledging. As far as Baba, Nappa, Raditz all those retro cards, while I applaud the effort, I don’t think they should be allowed in any dbz ccg tournaments. Those are not score cards. It is silly. I am sure I am not the only one who supports this..
to be able to go. to defile at least one midwestern piece of hotness (unlikely to happen at gencon itself). also that imaginary cards werent invented or that a tournament where imaginary cards are not allowed also happens. not saying i think the cards are broken, i have literally no idea what they do and will never know unless i go to the tournament and someone uses some fantasy land card against me in a game.
i think its cool that this site exists and that you all are spending your free time to keep interest in the game alive. i even think its cool that you are willing to spend your time making up the retro dream cards. i just personally think that any new cards and off the wall erratas (swk banned, peculiar restrictions/lack thereof, no dpr) that dont fit within the realistic scope of kbs end game dbz are not in the best interest of the game when it comes to the one big live event held each year. not speaking for anyone but myself, just happened to come on retro and wanted to throw in my 2 cents for whatever theyre worth
