Last year, we accomplished exactly what we wanted to with the Virtual Cards. We made a virtual set that was there if you wanted something new, but not necessary to play the game in a semi-competitive event. We hope to continue the tradition this year. Last year we started off with a new personality set, so let’s kick things off this year with a personality who definitely needed to be in the game.
First things first: Kami will be added to the list of personalities with Namekian Heritage for all Retro DBZ event.
Next, you’ll notice Kami’s most significant trait: When you play him as your Main Personality, there is no limit to the amount of Battlegrounds/Locations that can be in play (for both you and your opponent). Of course there is a limit of one Location/Battleground per name in play, so no sneaky multiples of West City or Tree of Might. We felt that this not only offered a really new and innovative way to play the game, but also captured the essence of Kami’s role in the series as the Guardian of Earth (ergo all the locations upon it). We did want to include an ability to nix locations, so a pesky City in Turmoil or Winter Countryside didn’t enter play and stay in play forever (without a Namekian Door Explosion, which with Kami the official ruling is that it only affects one Location/Battleground of the user’s choosing and all other effects of the attack being still active).
One last thing, which we try to avoid when making cards but felt we had no choice with this personality: we had to name a specific card that this personality cannot use (though the opponent can). Kami cannot use The Other World, despite him (unlike most characters) being able to visit that area at will in the series. The reason we did this was to avoid pesky combos with Snake Way. We didn’t want all Kami decks to revolve around the combo of Snake Way and The Other World, so we opted to cut one of those pieces out for this personality. But if you think about it, Kami was eventually condemned to HFIL as part of Piccolo in Dragon Ball GT, so it kinda makes sense.
That’s it for this personality level, but we still have three more to go! Check back soon for the preview of Kami Lv. 2 and 3!
Later, BroZ!
awesome! love battlegounds, and this ability is great. There are so many battle grounds that let you draw additional cards…combats could go on for a while, and with bing nemekian you have the staying power.
Will definitely be interesting to see what other combos will work with him. I wouldn’t call him top tier by any means, but it brings a whole new version of the classic “Land in Pain” dragonball deck to the “table”…..pun intended.
You can’t really say if he will be top tier or not until we see his other levels. He is definately interesting and worth a look.
I’m so damned glad to see kami make it as an MP set can’t wait to see his other cards, thinking of a way to make a earth ball deck for him, since he made the things to begain with.
Awesome. A location based deck? Got all your bases covered now.
I keep pushing for a theme based around Final Physical Attacks.
Um, where can I view all the other virtual cards. I always only see a scattered few here and there
On the Card Images page there is a link to the Virtual Cards subset. There is nothing in the 2013 one right now, but here are all the 2012 Cards: http://retrodbzccgcom.fatcow.com/card-images/virtual-cards-2012/
Nice power for Kami. After the lvl 2 & 3 hoping to see more namekian cards. Also maybe in the near future if you guys will consider making more named attacks such as Gohan’s Masenka blast, Trunks Burning Attack, Goku’s Dragon fist etc.
We like the idea of doing that, but have some concern about giving already popular/powerful characters more resources.
I was kicking around a thought about this and was gonna email you guys about the North Kai even but it was way too late : For this year’s Gen Con champ could have a card made by you guys and have it called Goku’s Super Dragon Fist and only they can use it. Kinda like UC. Then have new champ cards or what not. Orange Hat Guy is getting pretty good at making custom cards and I’m sure would be able to do it.
I’ve always been against player specific cards the like. They may make a good marketing tool when the game is alive and the idea is to sell packs and collect entrance fees, but in an environment where all we want to encourage is fun and originality we see no reason to grant any one player a specific advantage like that.
I agree with not having player specific cards. As for making named cards overpowering…doesn’t have to be like that ex: Gohan’s Masenka blast umm “energy attack doing 4 life. if one of your allies have been discarded or removed within the last combat raise your anger 1 and plus 4 life” Trunks Burning umm ” Energy Attack doing 6 life, If you stopped your opponents attack in the last attacker attack phase remove a battleground or location in play and any other copies from both life decks.
Just a quick thought, will the 2013 set be released before Diecon this year in June, or will we have to wait until Gencon for them? Not in a huge rush for them obviously, just more curious to see what new cards are available. Keep up the good work on keeping this community alive guys. When I found out about this, my first thought was that it was just a few people who had cards trying to find more players to play with, but I had no idea it had blown up like this, I love it.
Synthetix, are you going to the tournaments at Diecon, We are having 4 I think.
Not gonna lie, It would have been really cool to see him with some Piccolo function, since they are so intertwined in the show.
I agree with Allan Knight to an extent. Something to do with Piccolo or even Earth Dragon Balls would have been more thematic IMO. But they are your sets so I understand that you had your own vision.
He doesn’t do anything with the EDBs per se, but the idea behind his Level 4 was that he scatters them across the world (or universe in some cases).
I would hug you if there were to be a Kami Sensei.
