JustSaiyan.com recently got to attend the Dallas Comic Con Fan Days event, being Dallas locals and all. Once again held at the Irving Convention Center, the set-up was much better than the previous event and the congestion in the halls was not as bad this year. Hopefully in the coming years, Dallas Comic Con will move into a larger venue in Dallas proper. But it is good to see a local con find it’s footing and will hopefully grow much larger in the coming years.
I would say that my one complaint about the con is that there is only ever one panel going on at a time, and these are mostly just for media guests. There was only one strictly comic book themed panel, no anime content whatsoever and the few “topics” panels were once again mostly media guest vehicles rather than anything of substance to the topic. It would be nice if they added more content and discussion panels in the future by opening up a few more panel rooms and/or soliciting events submissions.
That being said, what was offered was worth the price of admission. The dealer’s room was robust and had many vendors, though there was little to none industry presence. The media guests were entertaining in their panels. We were able to catch Jason David Frank (the Green/White Power Ranger), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), Ron Perelman (Hellboy) and the Comic Book Legends Panel with Neal Adams and Herb Trimpe. Additionally we were able to catch voice actors Micah Solusod (Soul Eater) and Ayu Sakata (Sakevisual) in the artist alley, Mark Reznicek from The Toadies promoting his new comic Buzzkill (which is excellent) in the Dealer’s Hall, and Chuck Huber who voiced Emperor Pilaf, Garlic Jr. and Android 17 in Dragon Ball and recorded this message for us.
All in all, Dallas Comic Con is a con to watch, and we see it getting even bigger in the years to come.
