Here Comes Broly…

The new Broly movie is upon us and quite honestly, we don’t need a review for it here. You know you’re going to see it. What we can review are the many personality stacks of Broly! All in all he got three in Retro DBZ (we’re not going to talk about the Dragon Ball GT subset): The Legendary Super Saiyan, Part II and the Movie Promos. (Apologies the scans we have for the subsets aren’t the greatest.)

Yeah, we aren’t going to talk about this guy either.

Level One

All of these Broly basically have one goal, so we can lump them all together: Get off Level One! Most decks I’m aware of used the Legendary Super Saiyan Lv. 1, while maybe the odd Red Deck would opt for Broly the Gentle. The Calm seems tailor made for the Majin Buu Saga Saiyan Style Mastery, but who uses that?

Level Two

Things get a little more interesting at Level 2. I was always a fan of Super Saiyan as I usually played Broly to jump levels and this one had an attack, not to mention given the preferred Level One it was extremely likely you’d hit this level in combat (particularly devastating if you were just throwing attacks with the aid of the Cell Saga Saiyan Style Mastery). This was also pretty much your only option if you were running Broly in a non-Saiyan deck.

The other two have powers used when entering combat, which is kind of meh (especially on the Enraged Saiyan)… but on the Electrified, HOO BOY! While not as bonkers as Gohan the Swift or Cell, Stage Two, it is pretty darn close. If you’re not trying to jump levels, this is a pretty great level to sit on and pick up seven card hands.

Enraged Saiyan did have value if you just wanted to quickly 1-3 on Broly, but it was really outshined by the other options on this level.

Level Three

Here’s where things get really interesting as you have two very respectable attacks on Super Saiyan and Ferocious. Gotta give it up for the Super Saiyan for the double attack personally, but Ferocious is still vicious. If you’re a PanZ player, anti-prevention wasn’t as important in Retro DBZ as “critical damage” wasn’t a mechanic so it didn’t trigger any effects other than being able to capture a Dragon Ball and Endurance wasn’t as rampant.

I never really heard about Empowered getting any play, and really why would you over the other two? Also, if you were the odd Red player trying to make Broly work, the best this level could offer you is a Physical attack for +4 stages.

Level Four

And then there were two… I mean, it’s hard to scoff at the Legendary Saiyan’s massive rejuvenation, though if you’re not against another survival deck then this won’t do you much good. Plus Unbeatable’s attack is just so devastatingly good.

And chin up my Red friends… the Unbeatable isn’t locked to the Saiyan Style at all!

Level Five

Wow, this is… kind of anti-climactic. He’s your only option for a Level Five, but honestly if you weren’t going for MPPV (I’m looking at you, Red) then you should probably just stop at Level 4.

That’s it for Broly. He was definitely one of the better personalities in Retro DBZ and one of the only viable beats options for a while. We hope you enjoy the new Broly movie, we’ll be checking it out at the first showing!

Later, BroZ!
